Taxi Etiquette

– Overtaking/Undertaking an empty/light on cab and taking first job

– Taking the first job when an available cab has let you out of a road

– Setting down on the front of a rank (illegal to set down on a rank) and taking the 1st job

– Picking up within sight of an established working rank (except disabled).

– Brooming a job on a rank – if you have an appointment get out and tell the driver behind that you need to be at BLA BLA by X But don’t make a habit of it cos drivers do have a memory.

– Ranks are not linked to the establishment they are outside, they are just a rank, and therefore the driver on point (at the front) should get the first job within 100ft (this distance figure still seems to be up for debate)

– Always drive on the inside lane unless you are planning on turning right very soon. This way all drivers know where they are in terms of “who gets the next hail”

– Feeder ranks are ranks in their right. So if a job approaches you and you are at the front of a feeder, it’s yours. (a feeder rank is a separate rank that feeds onto another)

– At Paddington note the number of the cab you’re behind on the Bridge. Don’t go in front of them at the feeding trough.

– If you are dropping off while blocking taxis behind for hire, once you pull away, let them pass you. If someone else walks up to you and wants to get in, send them to the taxi behind.

– If you’re waiting to pull out of a driveway or the like, after just having dropped a job, and a vehicle lets you out, but there’s cab behind them with their light on, it’s good etiquette to leave the next job for them if it is very soon along the road. Basically if you’ve just had a job, give others a chance. Yes the general rule is if there is a vehicle between you and the cab behind them, and you pull out, then the next job is yours, but you have to start judging whether you’re being a bit greedy. Etiquette = common sense.

(As a butter boy you have to buy everyone in the cafe teas so stay out working and don’t get involved until your grown bigger teeth.)
